Mirage - NG015

New Game 015 - Mirage by ghost_dad

Mirage is a work in progress, but it is already tons of fun.  I'm going to call it a bi-platformer, because as the player, you control both an astronaut, and his mirror-world doppleganger.  The worlds are very similar, but not quite.  Which leads to some very interesting gameplay.  Check it out for yourself!

All I can really say at this point is, be prepared to see this screen a lot.

Crashlands - NG013

New Game 013:  Crashlands

My "100 New Games in 2018" odyssey continues with Crashlands from Butterscotch Shenanigans.  I've been watching the show Dev Diary which tells the story of Butterscotch Shenanigans (a team started by three brothers in St. Louis).  I went looking for the game on Steam, and lo and behold, it's already part of my 1,022 game library!

Crashlands is an exploration/crafting/survival game.  As a player, you explore the world, gather resources, craft better gear and tools, womp on some of the native fauna, and complete quests for colorful NPCs.  So far I am enjoying the relaxing nature of the collecting and crafting, but there is  excitement to be had when womping on the wompits and other alien beasts.

Fe - NG012

New Game 012:  Fe

I'm not entirely sure what is going on here.  But dang is it beautiful.  The visuals and the audio are both truly beautiful.  As the player, you take on the role of a fox like creature who interacts with the environment and other animals through song.  It's truly an interesting and beautiful experience.

Papers, Please - NG011

New Game 011:  Papers, Please

If you have any feelings, this game will most likely make you regret them.  This is a game about stamping (or not) entry visas.  The stories that the immigrants tell can pull at your heart strings, but ultimately, you have a family and a crappy job to protect.  So you stamp DENIED anyway, even though your heart tells you APPROVED.

Teslagrad - NG009

New Game 009:  Teslagrad

I tried out Teslagrad for the first time yesterday.  It's a lovely platformer with beautiful artwork, excellent soundtrack and some neat puzzles.

Uurnog Uurnlimited - NG010

New Game 010:  Uurnog Uurnlimited

I got to play this game on the Nintendo Switch yesterday at GDC.  I enjoyed the platforming mixed with some puzzles.  And the soundtrack was beautiful.  Apparently the soundtrack is algorithmically based, so it can adapt to gameplay quite well.

Russian Subway Dogs - NG008

Original jam prototype created for the GDC Piratekart. So Primitive!

New Game - 008:  Russian Subway Dogs

I met one of the developers of this awesome game yesterday at the Game Developer's Conference.  It's inspired by the true life story of the Moscow's stray dogs riding the metro looking for food.  The central mechanic is collecting food from the metro riders and trying to stay alive as long as possible.

Sacramento - NG007

New Game - 007:  Sacramento

Sacramento is a beautiful, surreal, and amazing experience.  I hesitate to call it a game in the mainstream/typical sense.  However, I feel like it is an impressive piece of interactive art, in the best way.

Into the Breach - NG006

New Game - 006:  Into the Breach

Into the Breach has been called Kaiju Chess by some.  I think it is an appropriate moniker.  This is a turn-based combat game in which you control three weapons protecting the public from a variety of gigantic insects.  All of the enemy's movements are decided one turn ahead of execution, which creates a very rich tactical strategy experience.

Alto's Odyssey - NG005

New Game - 005:  Alto's Odyssey

What an absolutely beautiful game.  I picked this up on my iPhone today and was very happy I did so.  The game's premise is simply, you are an adventurer, sandboarding (yes, sandboarding) through an endless desert.  Along the way you will encounter rocks, chasms, hot air balloons, and more.  The artwork is stunning, and the gameplay fluid.

The Walking Dead - NG004

New Game - 004:  The Walking Dead

I started playing this game the other night with my wife in sort of a casual couch coop fashion.  We'd take turns on the controller and make the dialog decisions together.  So far, it's a really fun take on the classic adventure game formula.  I'm enjoying the story and the approachability of the game to non-gamers (or I should say newly-formed gamers) like my wonderful wife.

Super Meat Boy - NG003

New Game - 003:  Super Meat Boy

After watching Indie Game:  The Movie (which I highly recommend), I wanted to make sure to try out all of the games presented.  The first one I am knocking off that list is Super Meat Boy.  This is a tough-as-nails precision platformer.  Which means you are going to die A LOT.  But, thankfully the developers were merciful and made the respawn time super short.  So, although you will bite the bullet many many many times, you won't have to waste any time reloading the level.  And since all of the levels are pretty short, you don't really lose much progress.

While it is definitely a difficult game, that difficulty gives a great sense of accomplishment when you do overcome the challenges presented.  And, it has a wonderful replay feature at the end of each level so you can see all of your attempts at one time.  I hope you enjoy this as much as me!

Overcooked - NG002

New Game - 002:  Overcooked

In my quest to play 100 new games this year, I brought my wife along for number 002.  We started playing Overcooked last night.  This is a cooperative cooking game where you each control a character in a variety of kitchens trying to  fulfill orders.  There is a very frantic pace to some of the challenges, with some very interesting twists thrown in.  I'm looking forward to playing this couch coop game again with my wonderful wife!

For Honor - NG001

New Game - 001:  For Honor

For my first new game of the new year, I broke down and bought For Honor during a Humble Bundle sale.  It's a gorgeous game, and so far the combat is a lot of fun.  I'll post some more impressions after I get a few hours under my belt.

A year of 100 games

I'm going to try out 100 new games this year.  I will post thoughts, ramblings, links and screen shots!  Hope you enjoy the ride with me!  If you try any of these games, I look forward to hearing your thoughts about them.  They will all be tagged with "NGXXX".

Kingdom of Loathing

This is a text-based RPG with a fantastic of humor.  The implementation of the game's mechanics are very slick.  While it appears to be a very simplistic game, I'm sure there's a lot going on under the hood.  I enjoyed my time with this game, and I'm sure I'll check in every once in a while.
